Pictures and press confrence write up from here.

Q: Was it destiny that you chose the part? Or did the part choose you?
Ben Barnes: I think it’s discomforting to think about the idea of life where everything is fated and not having freedom of choice. That’s kind of unsettling, but it’s also unsettling to think of a life where the way you behave and treat other people doesn’t come back around and earn you something in return, which you could put into the category of something other than chaos. It’s an interesting balance and a question that affects every life. It’s an interesting theme to explore in any film, whether it’s in space exploration or the dark ages.
Q: What were the physical challenges of the role and what were the costumes like?
Ben Barnes: I remember having a fitting and trying on these sandals and weird length pants … we went simple at the beginning and, subconsciously, the clothing does performance for you, because as you move through the story, gradually my clothes become like Master Gregory’s and it has a cloak, and a hood, and is more black. They play with subconscious turns of good and evil and who you’re becoming more or less like. It does some of the work establishing tones and colors and how you feel. You feel confident.

Interview from here

Well we shot a good chunk of the film in Providence, Rhode Island because I think they could find a lot of the back alleys and things that we needed for that gritty urban texture. Then we shot the remaining stuff in the North End. The real treat about filming this was that when I arrived they had a lot of the supporting cast already, and they were as authentic as they possibly could be. A lot of the places we shot were well-known Boston bars. We actually got a lot of the gangsters and the bar owners who are infamous in the town to play cameos. We had some of the gangsters played by ex-policemen who had seen this story from the other side. Everyone in Boston is such a great storyteller. They are so keen to tell you stories about the dealings they had with these kinds of characters in the past. There was no limit to the amount of secondhand research that was available to me.

Your upcoming film, Seventh Son will finally be released on February 6th. Were you disappointed when the movie’s original release date was postponed?

Barnes: I was disappointed that it got postponed because you make something and you want it to get out there. You will now be able to hopefully enjoy it, and that is exactly how I viewed this film. It was not quite what I expected when I saw it. It has this lovely, fun, nostalgic feel to it. There are four central characters, the love story and the history between the two older characters. It has magic and intrigue. It has this great subject that Jeff Bridges and I were very keen to highlight about the dark, the light and the good and the bad in everyone. It almost relates to the By the Gun as well. Can you love even if you do not understand hatred? Can you murder out of love? Those are underlying themes that could be set in any universe. The idea of fate and destiny is very present as well. Obviously the thrill of working with your heroes in every scene was a big draw for me to do that film. Actually I wanted to get it out there, but it was truly a studio issue in terms of Legendary Pictures moving to Universal Studios and that studio already having their slate set for the rest of the year. It was not anything to do with the film itself. It will find its audience when it is supposed to.

Ben Barnes: I’ve done some work in the fantasy realm before, but I think a lot of films are presented as an allegory of good versus evil, and they have very interesting subtexts. Not all too often are the characters really explored, to the point of what dilemmas they’re going through, in their approach to what they’re doing. I think that whole concept of good versus evil, and are you evil if you’re attempting to kill or murder something that you believe to be evil, are dilemmas that these characters are struggling with, particularly my character, as an apprentice. He’s somebody who’s new to it, but knows that he’s meant for something more, in this world. How exactly that’s going to play out is something that he doesn’t know, and the idea of fate and destiny is painted on top of that, as well. There’s a lot of interesting things, thematically.

“What I like about films like these is that you can heighten the imagery to take on the themes it represents in fantasy.
“If you want to talk about forces of nature, then you literally have trees uprooting themselves and starting to move. When you look at anthropomorphism, turning into animals actually means representing different sides of yourself. When it comes to casting magic spells, you have to earn the power or experience to use it.”

“That’s what makes the fantasy genre so fantastic. It’s pure escapism. You can watch the movie just to have a good time. It’s fun to find out who’s going to win at the end,” he concluded, before fake-whispering, “Me.”
THOUGH Jeff Bridges had to skip the press meet in New York because he wasn’t feeling well, his presence was very much felt at the event.

Co-star Ben Barnes said working with the 65-year-old actor was the “biggest draw” of doing Seventh Sonfor him.
“I would love to be in his head for just five minutes,” Barnes attested. “He’s got this script that’s just riddled with drawings, amazing little cartoons of monsters and notes everywhere.”
Barnes also revealed how he’d steal one of Bridges’ drawings on the set of Seventh Son.
“He used to leave this little drawings on napkins where we were eating. At the end of the meal, I’d secretly shove it into my pocket.”
